Flashback Friday: A Whale of a Tale

Some of you may recall that we have a budding artist in our mix already. You may also recall that I take no credit in this area of development since I have had years of practicing, yet I still can't master a simple Hello Kitty rendition of my own that I think is up to snuff. But I would be remiss if I didn't mention that Peanut also has proven to be quite the illustrator. In fact, when I looked back at some previous photos for this Flashback Friday, I found this little gem:

That is Peanut at age two and a half and his proud picture on his Thomas Aqua Doodle of a whale. I remember being so completely shocked when he told me he was going to draw a whale and then he actually drew something that resembled a whale. As any Aqua Doodler knows, those pictures dry up in a flash. Hence the picture. I had to show Daddy his amazing accomplishment!

Tonight was a similar scenario. Peanut was drawing the cover of his favorite Dr. Seuss book, and the next thing I knew, this had materialized:

What a difference three years can make! I still think that is darn impressive for an almost-six-year-old. But then again, if you asked me to draw a lion, it would probably look like a dinosaur. A dinosaur with a cute little pink bow on the side of its head, a' la Hello Kitty, of course, but a dinosaur all the same. And this, my friends, is the reason I have stacks of preschool and kindergarten artwork all over my house that I can't seem to part with. Although I know that even if Peanut had my more inferior drawing gene, I would love his artwork all the same. I might just feel the urge to put a little bow on his dinosaur, that's all. :)

Very cool! You may have an art major in your midst! I used to do the exact same thing as a kid! :)

He is extremely talented!! :)

You could always scan the artwork and publish it as a book for them so you don't have stacks of artwork laying around. I think I saw this idea on Oprah.

I'm so impressed! It's really neat to watch how their talents grow as the year fly by!

Soooo cute (both the artist and his work!)! Kelly's idea is outrageously cool! Thanks for all the great "Flashback Fridays." Keep 'em comin'!

Holy cow! The cover is awesome. Of course, we already know Cameron is awesome. I would definitely scan the artwork into shutterfly or snapfish and create a whole book. I plan on doing that once the school year is over. It did come from oprah and the samples she had were really cute!

I saw the Oprah show with the idea of scanning everything, too, but I have three years worth of artwork. I do think it is a neat idea, but when the episode aired, they gave some great deal to anyone who bought an album in the couple of days afterwards. I am all about saving money, but I didn't have enough time to get it together in just a few days. I do think that is a creative option, and the sooner I do it, the less daunting a task it will be in the future.

That piece of art is a keeper for sure! Nice composition, color and control, Peanut!

Since many of the kids' art pieces are oversized or awkwardly shaped, I've just taken pictures of them with my camera--same thing as scanning, I guess. Our kids also like to take pictures of their masterpieces with themselves in the photo as well--so they can look back and see what they looked like when they created it. This goes for exceptional blocks buildings or card house creations...and other 3D things that just can't be kept in tact forever.

I will say that we rarely go through our storage boxes full of old artwork, but we go through our annual photo books frequently.
